Morning or afternoon?

Molokini is a morning place. By lunchtime the trade winds usually push the afternoon boats to a sheltered reef on the other side of the bay.

Look at the departure times and a pattern jumps out. Almost every Molokini boat leaves between 6:30 and 8:00 AM. The one afternoon option on this site leaves at 1:00 PM, costs about half, and calls itself Molokini or Coral Gardens.

That is the wind at work. Here is why it matters, what afternoon guests actually report, and when the afternoon trip still makes sense.

The quick answer

Book a morning trip if Molokini is the goal. Operators say trade winds typically pick up around 11 AM, and Four Winds says its morning trips reach the crater about 90% of the time while afternoon trips rarely do. Afternoon boats usually snorkel Coral Gardens on the west Maui coast instead. The $100 afternoon trip is fine as a second snorkel day or a cheap, short outing, not as your one Molokini morning.

Is it better to go to Molokini in the morning or the afternoon?

The morning, clearly. Boats leave between 6:30 and 8:00 AM because the water is calmest then; afternoon boats usually can't reach the crater.

Why can't afternoon boats reach Molokini?

The trade winds. They usually build from late morning and funnel through the channel between Maui and Kaho'olawe, which makes the open water around the crater rough by early afternoon.

Four Winds, which has run Molokini trips out of Ma'alaea for decades, writes in its trade-wind article that the winds typically pick up around 11 a.m., and that its morning tours reach the crater about 90% of the time. Its afternoon trip page says Molokini is rarely accessible in the afternoon. Those are operator figures, not a state statistic, but every boat's schedule tells the same story.

Molokini sits in open water about 2.5 miles off the Makena coast, in the 'Alalakeiki Channel. The captain has to moor, put dozens of people in the water and get them back up a ladder. When the chop builds with the wind, that stops being safe.

What is Coral Gardens, and is it any good?

A shallow reef on the west Maui coast, sheltered by high cliffs. It is pleasant, often has turtles, and is not Molokini: guests rate it from lovely to dull.

Coral Gardens lies on the edge of the Olowalu reef system, under the cliffs on the way to Lahaina. Four Winds says the cliffs shelter it from the afternoon trades. The water is shallower than at the crater, and the coral sits closer to the surface.

Reviews split. "Couldn't make it to Molokini but coral gardens was just amazing!" wrote one Malolo afternoon guest, and another: "Coral Gardens was beautiful and we saw lots of colorful fish and coral!" Critical reviewers on the same trip describe few fish, cloudy water, and a site right below the highway. Expect a decent reef snorkel, not the clear blue water of the crater.

What do afternoon guests actually report?

Most say they went to Coral Gardens. The happy ones knew it in advance; the unhappy ones did not.

One 5-star reviewer put it plainly: "Afternoon trips tend to go Coral gardens and not the crater d/t rougher seas, but we still had a good time." Another explained why the trade-off suited her family: "[...] if you go in the afternoon be prepared for that. We were and we didn't want to get up early for a morning trip."

The 2- and 3-star reviews follow a pattern: guests who learned on board that the afternoon boat seldom reaches the crater, and wished they had booked a morning trip. Read the title of any afternoon listing carefully. If the title names two places, assume you will see the second one.

What time do the morning Molokini boats leave?

Between 6:30 and 8:00 AM, with check-in 15 to 45 minutes earlier. Malolo and the Elua yacht go first, at 6:30.

Earliest first, with the check-in time each listing asks for:

The later the start, the closer you cut it with the wind. One Maui Reef Adventures guest wrote that by the time the 8:00 AM boat arrived, the wind had picked up enough to keep them out of the crater, so they snorkeled the back side instead. Calypso is strict about its check-in: one guest walking up at 7:29 watched it pull away.

What happens if the morning is windy too?

The captain picks another site, often Turtle Town or a sheltered spot on the coast. No boat refunds the difference; a full cancellation gets a new date or a refund.

Morning is the best bet, not a promise. Pride of Maui guests in July and September 2026 described skipping Molokini because of wind. A Calypso guest reported reaching the crater, being told it was unsafe, trying Turtle Town, then trying the crater again without luck. Others had a fine day at Turtle Town: "We were supposed to go to Molokini crater but couldn't due to weather. We went to Turtle town and had hours to snorkel in calm beautiful water."

If Molokini is the one thing you came for, book early in your stay. A cancelled or diverted morning then leaves room for a second try.

When is the afternoon trip the right choice?

As a second snorkel day, for families who will not manage a 5:45 AM check-in, or on a tight budget when the reef matters more than the crater.

  • Second day on the water: you have done Molokini in the morning and want more turtles and reef for $100.
  • Late risers and toddlers: check-in is 12:30 PM and you are back by about 4:00. One guest brought a one-year-old and praised the captain for helping her into the water.
  • Short trips: three hours suits people who found a 5.5-hour day too long. One reviewer who had done the long trip before called the shorter, later trip perfect.
  • Not for: anyone whose only boat day this is, or who has a photo of the crescent in mind.

Four Winds runs a similar afternoon trip at $120 for adults direct, leaving at 1:30 PM.

Can you see whales on a morning Molokini trip?

Yes, from about November to May, with the peak from January to March. Morning and afternoon boats both see them; the morning still wins for snorkeling.

Humpbacks winter in the warm, shallow channel between Maui, Lana'i and Kaho'olawe, and Molokini sits right in it. NOAA's Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale sanctuary puts the season at roughly November to May. Boats must stay at least 100 yards away (NOAA viewing rules), so the whales come to you, not the other way round. Our whale season post has this winter's details.

Want the afternoon on the water anyway? A sunset dinner cruise from the same harbor is a better use of it than a second-choice snorkel.

Frequently asked questions

What time is best to snorkel Molokini?

The first departures, 6:30 to 7:30 AM. Operators say the trade winds usually pick up around 11 AM, and the crater is calmest and clearest early.

Do afternoon snorkel tours go to Molokini?

Rarely. They are sold as Molokini or Coral Gardens, and guests mostly report Coral Gardens, a sheltered reef on the west Maui coast.

Is Coral Gardens worth it?

As a reef snorkel with a chance of turtles, yes. As a replacement for Molokini, no: the water is shallower and less clear, and reviews are mixed.

What if my morning trip can't reach Molokini?

The captain chooses another site and the trip goes ahead without a partial refund. If the operator cancels the whole trip, you get a new date or a full refund.
