Molokini on the Four Winds

Four Winds II is a glass-bottom catamaran that leaves Ma'alaea's slip 80 at 7:00 AM for a long single stop at Molokini, with breakfast, a taco lunch, beer and wine. Pick it for kids and nervous swimmers: sea boards with viewing windows, vests, prescription masks and a crew that guests praise for patience.

Four Winds Molokini Sail & Snorkel

About this experience

Four Winds II is the family boat of the Ma'alaea fleet. The glass-bottom room lets small children watch fish without getting wet, and the gear list goes far beyond masks and fins: sea boards (big floats with clear windows), boogie boards, flotation belts for adults, life vests for kids and optical masks. Breakfast and lunch are included (guests mention a taco bar with fish or pork), and so are beer and wine. SNUBA is sold on board for divers aged 8 and up.

Four Winds is unusually open about the odds. Its own FAQ says the morning snorkel makes Molokini about 90% of the time, with Coral Gardens as the fallback, and the listing adds "We can never guarantee a snorkel location". Most mornings you get one long session at the crater rather than two shorter stops; when the wind wins, guests in 2026 describe a calm Turtle Town or another sheltered reef instead.

Two things to plan for. Seasickness: guests report quite a few people sick on rougher days, and the crew isn't allowed to hand out medicine, only ginger drinks, so bring your own. And the steps down to the glass-bottom room are steep and slippery when wet. If you'd rather have two stops, the Pride of Maui adds Turtle Town; for all-ages fun with slides, the Calypso is the bigger party.

What guests say

★★★★★

We took our three kids who are 6, 8 and 10 and they had a blast! They had several different flotation devices to choose from - life jackets, float belts, kick boards and the sea board, which my 6 year old LOVED.

Great for families with small kids. Not overbooked, great boat and accommodations, multiple ways for young kids to engage in the experience - life vests, floating vessels, placards to pinpoint wildlife, etc.

They had a lot of gear to help first time snorkelers. They even had a selection of prescription masks (total game changer)

We couldn’t go to Molokini due to winds and rough waters but the crew made the trip fantastic by diverting to another fabulous snorkeling spot. The fish tacos they served for lunch were fabulous and great open bar.

Tips before you book

  • Take seasickness medicine before you board. Four Winds' FAQ says the crew can't give out any medicine, only ginger drinks.
  • Pay for parking by QR code with a card. Secure Parking Hawaii tows unpaid cars at Ma'alaea.
  • Bring non-aerosol mineral sunscreen, a towel, a hat and a cover-up. Storage on board is limited.
  • Hold the handrail on the steps down to the glass-bottom room. They're steep and get slippery.
  • Book the morning, not the afternoon trip: Four Winds says Molokini is rarely reachable after lunch.

Frequently asked questions

How often does Four Winds reach Molokini?

Its own FAQ says about 90% of the time on the morning snorkel. When it's unsafe the boat goes to Coral Gardens or another sheltered reef, and there's no partial refund for the change.

Is Four Winds good for kids and non-swimmers?

It's one of the best: a glass-bottom room, sea boards with windows you can lie on, life vests for small children, flotation belts for adults and crew in the water. Masks fit from about age 3. See our Molokini with kids guide.

How many stops does the Four Winds make?

Usually one long stop at Molokini. Guests describe it as plenty of time in the water. If you want a second turtle stop, choose the Pride of Maui or the Calypso.

Can I do SNUBA on Four Winds?

Yes, for an extra fee paid to the dive instructor on board, from age 8, with limited places. Our SNUBA guide explains how it differs from scuba.
