Malolo Charters (Boss Frog's) · Ma'alaea Harbor
A 55-foot catamaran leaves Ma'alaea at 1:00 PM for three hours of snorkeling at Molokini or Coral Gardens, whichever the afternoon wind allows, with a hot-dog lunch. Pick it for the price and the lie-in, and go in expecting Coral Gardens: that's where most afternoon trips end up.

Read the title carefully: "Molokini or Coral Gardens". Maui's trade winds usually build from late morning, and by 1:00 PM the open channel to the crater is often too rough. Four Winds, which runs its own afternoon trip, says on its afternoon page that Molokini is rarely accessible after lunch. Guests on this Malolo trip in 2026 say the same: "Afternoon trips tend to go Coral gardens and not the crater". No one refunds the difference.
Coral Gardens is a sheltered reef on the west Maui coast, under the cliffs on the way to Lahaina, so the ride is short and calm. It has plenty of reef fish, eels and the odd octopus, and turtles some days. It is shallower and less colorful than Molokini, and it sits below the highway; the unhappy reviews call it average and complain about few fish and poor visibility. The happy ones loved the shorter day, the price and the Mai Tais.
On board you get flotation, a hot dog with chips, soda, juice and water. Alcohol is $3 a drink after the swim. If Molokini is the reason you're on Maui, spend the extra and go early: the same boat at 6:30 AM costs $160 and includes breakfast, lunch and two stops. Our morning or afternoon guide explains the wind.
At the desk outside Boss Frog's, 300 Ma'alaea Rd. Scan the code and sign the waiver for each person; the crew then walks you across the street to slip 87.
The captain names the snorkel site once he or she has seen the wind and swell.
Usually Coral Gardens under the west Maui cliffs; Molokini only if the channel is calm.
Lunch on the way home, with $3 cocktails for those over 21.
Three hours after departure, with time for a sunset somewhere else.
★★★★★Afternoon trips tend to go Coral gardens and not the crater d/t rougher seas, but we still had a good time. Staff was very friendly and good with all guests
★★★★★The snorkeling area wasn’t the crater and we didn’t see any turtles. So if you go in the afternoon be prepared for that. We were and we didn’t want to get up early for a morning trip. [...] We also liked that it was a shorter day (about 3.5 hours).
★★★★★Even though we didn’t get to Molikini due to the high winds, Coral Gardens was beautiful and we saw lots of colorful fish and coral!
★★★★★This was one of the highlights of our honeymoon we had a great ride to our snorkel spot at the corral gardens. Saw amazing fish and even a little octopus.

Sometimes, on calm afternoons. Most of the time it snorkels Coral Gardens on the west Maui coast, because the trade winds make the channel to Molokini rough after midday. Many 2026 reviews describe Coral Gardens.
A sheltered reef below the West Maui Mountains cliffs, with reef fish, eels and sometimes turtles. It's shallower and less clear than Molokini, and guests' opinions range from beautiful to average.
A hot dog, chips and a soft drink. Juice and water are included; beer and cocktails are $3 each for guests 21 and over, served after the swim.
As a cheap, short snorkel, yes. As a Molokini trip, usually no. If the crater matters, the early Malolo or the 2-hour raft from Kihei give you much better odds.
