Molokini on the Calypso

Maui's only triple-decker catamaran leaves Ma'alaea at 7:30 AM for Molokini Crater and a second stop off the Makena coast, with breakfast, lunch, two slides and a glass-bottom room. Pick it for a full, easy morning with kids or first-time snorkelers, and for the ladders that get a big crowd into the water fast.

Molokini & Turtle Town on the Calypso

About this experience

The Calypso is a 149-passenger power catamaran built in Hawaii and delivered to Maui in 2017, and it's the only triple-decker in the fleet. That size buys you things the small boats can't offer: two waterslides, a "Jump for Joy" platform, a glass-bottom viewing room, two freshwater showers and plenty of shade. Breakfast is pastries, muffins and fruit; lunch is flatbread turkey sandwiches or veggie burgers with chips, potato salad, fruit and cookies. Coffee, juice and soda are included. Cocktails cost $3 each, and the bar only opens after the last swim.

The plan is Molokini first, while the water is calm, then Turtle Town on the Makena coast. The listing is careful to say that the captains choose the snorkel sites each day based on wind and swell, and the reviews show why. In September 2026 one guest had the crater cut short by building waves; another boat load never got in at Molokini because the sea was too rough. Nobody refunds the difference when that happens, on any boat. Read our guide to the morning wind before you book.

The honest downside is the crowd. Up to 149 people means a line in the parking lot before check-in, a busy buffet and seats taken on a first come, first served basis. One reviewer warned to "expect to be run into and kicked when snorkeling". The crew is large and well drilled, and plenty of 5-star reviews say the boat never felt full once everyone was aboard. If a calmer deck matters more than slides, look at the Maui Reef Adventures small boat or the Elua yacht.

What guests say

★★★★★

Boat is large and comfortable with loads of ladders so despite the large tour size, everyone gets in and out of the water quickly. Crew is amazing, good sailors and great hosts/coaches for snorkeling.

It is a large boat with a lot of people on it. We had a 5 and 9 year old. Our 9 year old did great. Our 5 year old used one of the floaties you can lay on and look down into the ocean.

Parking is LIMITED and tight. Show up early. And you have to pay. [...] I get VERY motion sick and was skeptical about being on the water for 5.5 hours but, was convinced I’d be okay since it’s a “bigger boat”. I will tell you that it wasn’t bad. I sat in the front.

They showed us how to snorkel appropriately. We saw tons of tropical fish, 2 sea turtles and even eels! Great experience

Tips before you book

  • Arrive 45 minutes before the 6:45 AM check-in. The line forms in the parking lot, and the last people aboard get the worst seats and the leftovers at the buffet.
  • Ma'alaea parking is pay-by-QR with a card, and towing is enforced. Feed the meter for six hours, not five.
  • Prone to seasickness? Take your own tablets an hour before departure, or buy Dramamine on board (2 tablets for $5). Sit low and near the front, as one guest did.
  • Bring a towel and mineral sunscreen: since October 2022 Maui County allows only zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
  • Order a vegetarian or gluten-free lunch when you book. The crew can't swap it on the day.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Calypso always snorkel at Molokini?

No. The listing says the captains choose the sites daily from wind, swell and experience. Most mornings the boat reaches the crater, but guests in 2026 report crater swims cut short, or skipped altogether in favor of the coast. There's no refund for a changed site; an operator cancellation gets a new date or a full refund through Viator.

How many people are on the Calypso?

Up to 149. It's the biggest boat on this list, which is why it has two slides, many ladders and a large crew. If you want fewer people, the Ali'i Nui sail takes 65 and the Makena Coast raft 19.

What time should I arrive for the Calypso?

Check-in is mandatory at 6:45 AM and the boat leaves at 7:30 AM sharp. Allow time to find and pay for parking. One older review describes the boat pulling away at 7:29 with latecomers on the dock.

Is the Calypso good for kids?

Yes, it's one of the best picks for families: child fares cover ages 4 to 12, there are float boards you can lie on and look down through, a glass-bottom room and two slides. See our guide to Molokini with kids.
