Molokini on a small boat

A small yellow boat from the end of the Ma'alaea pier takes no more than 35 guests to Molokini and a turtle cove off the Makena coast, with snacks and a wrap for lunch. Pick it for the small group and a crew that guests rate 4.9 out of 5, with sea turtles at close range.

Molokini & Turtle Cove Small-Boat Snorkel

About this experience

Maui Reef Adventures runs its small-group trip on a yellow, raft-style boat (the listing names the Ocean Freedom and the Reef Explorer) from the loading dock at the very end of the Ma'alaea pier. The group is capped at 35, and one September 2026 guest counted 15 to 20. That's the point of the trip: small enough to slip into a turtle cove off the Makena coast that the big catamarans can't reach, and to move on fast when a spot is crowded.

The day usually runs as a turtle stop and Molokini, in whichever order the captain prefers, with close to an hour at the crater. On good days guests report bonus stops, including the back wall of Molokini where the reef drops off hundreds of feet. Snacks, soda and water go round all morning, lunch is a turkey wrap or veggie sandwich, and the crew had a gluten-free option for one guest who asked ahead.

The honest side: the listing says "Not recommended for non swimmers", and the boat is low and bumpy in a chop. It leaves at 8:00 AM, later than the big boats, so the wind has more time to build; one July 2026 reviewer felt that cost them calm water at the crater. There's little room for bags, and the boat won't wait for latecomers. Confirmation can take up to 48 hours. Want the same small-boat feel from Kihei, with a shorter ride? The Makena Coast raft takes 19.

What guests say

★★★★★

Was nervous because picture of the boat looked small, but it was a good size, felt very safe & stable. Guides were incredible, took us to two extra stops because we had good conditions and strong swimmers in the group. Approximately 15-20 people in the group.

Then we went to Molokini crater and were given close to an hour to snorkel and enjoy the area. We saw an incredible amount of tropical fish and even an eel!

Keira K. · Oct 2026

The boat was smaller than other tours but for good reason: they got us close to a cove known to have sea turtles that larger boats couldn't access. We were not disappointed!

We had our parents, kids grandparents (both mid 70s) and they had the time of their lives. They even had corrective goggles for my daughter in law.

Tips before you book

  • Pay for parking at the Secure Parking signs by QR code and enter your plate number. Allow time: the dock is at the far end of the pier.
  • Bring a small bag only. Large backpacks and luggage aren't allowed on board.
  • Seasickness is real on a small boat in a chop. One July 2026 guest reported people getting sick; take medicine before you leave.
  • Ask for vegetarian or gluten-free food when you book.
  • Bring a towel and mineral sunscreen, plus a light layer: guests mention rain showers and cool water.

Frequently asked questions

How many people are on the Maui Reef Adventures boat?

35 at most, according to the listing. Guests in 2026 counted between about 15 and 20 on their trips.

Can non-swimmers go on Maui Reef Adventures?

The listing says it's not recommended for non-swimmers. Life vests are available and some nervous swimmers loved it, but a strong swimmer is better off here. Non-swimmers should look at the Four Winds sea boards and glass bottom.

Where do I check in?

At the Ma'alaea Harbor loading dock, at the very end of the pier by the biodiesel station. The yellow boat docks at 7:30 AM for boarding and leaves at 8:00 AM.

Is the turtle stop at Turtle Town?

It's a turtle cove off the Makena coast, the same stretch as Turtle Town, but small enough that the big catamarans can't get in. Our harbor guide has a map of where each boat goes.
