Malolo Charters (Boss Frog's) · Ma'alaea Harbor

The early Malolo to Molokini

Malolo is a 55-foot catamaran that leaves Ma'alaea at 6:30 AM, the earliest departure on this site, for Molokini and Turtle Town with breakfast and a deli lunch. Pick it for the price: it's the cheapest full morning trip, and the early start gives you the calmest water of the day.

Early Molokini & Turtle Town on the Malolo

About this experience

Malolo is run by Boss Frog's, the snorkel rental chain, and you check in at a desk outside its Ma'alaea store at 5:45 AM. The 55-foot catamaran has two restrooms and a freshwater shower, and guests mention a slide and a jumping board off the top deck that kids love. Breakfast is pastries, muffins and fruit; lunch is turkey flatbread sandwiches or veggie burgers with potato salad, chips, fruit, veggies and cookies. Coffee, tea, juice, soda and water are included. Cocktails are $3 and wetsuits $10.

Guests report about an hour at Molokini and an hour at Turtle Town, and the order can switch. The listing is clear that the captains choose the sites from the weather each day, and the critical reviews from summer and fall 2026 describe days without Turtle Town, either a second crater swim or the whole morning at Molokini. One September 2026 group got lucky the other way: a calm day and a bonus third site.

Two more caveats from the fine print and the reviews. Boss Frog's also runs the Calypso, and when the Malolo is in dry dock guests have been moved, sometimes to a much bigger boat with little notice. And at this price the crew is good but the operation feels commercial to some. If you want a smaller boat for a bit more, look at the Maui Reef Adventures trip.

What guests say

★★★★★

We spent about 1 hour snorkling at Molokini and another hour snorkeling at Turtle Town. The time went by quickly but everyone left happy and tired. Mahalo Malolo crew!!!

This was no rush, chill snorkeling with more than enough time to see the areas. They were well organized & had multiple float options for people who wanted that.

We had a nice breakfast on the way to Molokini and a great lunch with sandwiches, potato salad and chips for lunch. The snorkeling at Molokini was nice, saw multiple fish species and we swam with sea turtles at the second stop near Makena Beach.

There was always a person safe-warding our group from a paddle table in the water and there was a professional photographer on board to take picture on and off the water (this is paid extra if you want the pictures).

Tips before you book

  • Set two alarms. Check-in at Boss Frog's is 5:45 AM and the boat leaves at 6:30 AM sharp; from Kaanapali that means leaving around 5:00 AM.
  • Bring a card for parking (pay by QR code) and some cash for drinks, photos and the tip.
  • The water at 6:30 AM is cool. Rent a wetsuit for $10 if you get cold easily.
  • Order a vegetarian or gluten-free lunch when you book: the crew can't change it on the day.
  • Pack mineral sunscreen only, a hat and a light jacket for the early ride out.

Frequently asked questions

What time does the Malolo leave?

Check-in is mandatory at 5:45 AM at Boss Frog's in Ma'alaea, and the boat departs at 6:30 AM. You're back around noon.

Is the Malolo the same as the Calypso?

Same company (Boss Frog's), same menu, different boat. Malolo is a 55-foot catamaran capped at 66 guests on this trip; the Calypso is a triple-decker for 149. Guests have occasionally been moved between the two when a boat is in maintenance.

Does the Malolo go to Turtle Town every time?

No. Turtle Town is the plan, but the captains decide on the day. In 2026, some groups snorkeled Molokini twice or stayed at the crater when the coast was rough. No discount is given for a changed stop.

Is the Malolo good value?

At $160 it's the cheapest way to get two stops, breakfast and lunch. The trade-offs are the very early start, drinks at $3 extra and a boat that feels commercial to some guests. Our price guide compares every boat.
